James M. Shwayder, M.D., J.D. is an Adjunct Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida specializing in gynecologic ultrasound. Dr. Shwayder received his medical degree from the University of Colorado and completed his residency at the Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. From 1982-1998 he was in private practice in Virginia. In 1998, he joined the faculty at the University of Colorado. He also earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from the University of Denver College of Law in 2003. In 2006, he joined the University of Louisville as the Director of Gynecology and Director of the Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery, ultimately becoming the Vice-Chair of Clinical Affairs. In 2012, he became the Chair at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, remaining there until 2018.
Dr. Shwayder is a Fellow of ACOG and a Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Dr. Shwayder has served on the Board of Directors at AAGL and AIUM. For AIUM, Dr. Shwayder has been the Chair of the Clinical Standards Committee, Chair of the Coding Committee, and previously served as the AIUM representative to the AMA CPT Advisory Committee. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. He is also an editor for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology and a past editor for Obstetrics & Gynecology. With over 40 years of ultrasound experience, Dr. Shwayder is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in gynecologic ultrasound.
