Ultrasound in Global Health

An Opportunity for the Ultrasound Community to Advance Universal Healthcare Globally

Unlike in High Income Countries (HIC), access to Ultrasound (US) in Low/ Middle Income Countries (LMIC) often remains poor in rural areas. Despite its portability and affordability, US remains anlmost exclusively used in specialty clinics or hospitals. As a result, basic healthcare challenges (eg.maternal mortality) remain unacceptably high especially in underserved remote areas of developing countries across the globe - with devastating consequences for families and communities resulting in poverty and migration. “Democratizing” imaging through POCUS in primary care settings especially in remote areas of LMIC has the potential to not only address these basic healthcare challenges, but to bring all of primary care to a higher level despite staffing shortages - an essential step on the road to universal healthcare. .

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the critical role of point-of-care-ultrasound in improving prenatal healthcare and reducing maternal and infant mortality in LMICs and its effect on gender equity.
  • Discuss the impact of POCUS and access barriers in primary care settings of remote and underserved regions of developing countries beyond maternal and newborn health.
  • Communicate and support potential roles for healthcare professionals from high-income countries in ultrasound knowledge transfer in low income countries.
