Dr. María Mercedes Ancheta González is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist with extensive experience in high-risk obstetrics, fetal diagnosis, and perinatal care. She earned her degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology from San Carlos University of Guatemala, graduating with academic excellence, and later specialized in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Pontifical Bolivarian University in Colombia.
She is the Founder and Director of the Maternal-Fetal Unit NACER in Quetzaltenango and serves as a Maternal-Fetal Specialist at the Western Regional Hospital and a Consultant at IGSS. She has played a key role in advancing fetal medicine in Guatemala, particularly in fetal growth restriction, fetal disease, and fetal surgery.
Dr. Ancheta is leading efforts to establish Guatemala’s first fetal surgery program, addressing the urgent need for in-country treatment of congenital malformations. She is collaborating with a national and international team to develop a fetal surgery center that will provide life-saving procedures, including placental laser surgery, spina bifida repair, and intrauterine transfusions.
Beyond clinical practice, she is deeply involved in medical education and research, serving as an instructor in the ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) program and mentoring OBGYN residents in tertiary public hospitals. She has presented research on perinatal outcomes and fetal therapy at global congresses, including the World Congress in Fetal Medicine and ISUOG Congress.
Dr. Ancheta is a founding member and secretary of the Guatemalan Maternal-Fetal Medicine Association and has held leadership roles within the Guatemalan Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Her dedication to fetal medicine, research, and expanding access to care is shaping the future of maternal and perinatal health in Guatemala.
