Dr. Blaivas studied aerospace engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan prior to switching to biology. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan and also completed an emergency medicine residency, followed by an emergency ultrasound fellowship at Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Blaivas is a Professor of Medicine (affiliate) at the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine. He is a POCUS pioneer having published over 250 peer reviewed articles and edited 6 medical textbooks. His research interests have included resuscitation, lung ultrasound, prehospital and space applications, ocular ultrasound, ultrasound guided procedures as well as bench research. Dr. Blaivas was cofounder of WINFOCUS and SUSME, having served as president of both. He was the founder and first editor of The Ultrasound Journal. Dr. Blaivas has been the emergency ultrasound section chair for ACEP, SAEM and AIUM. For six years, he served as AIUM third Vice President on its executive committee. Dr. Blaivas has served on the board of the WFUMB and continues to work on POCUS education and research around the world. He has also been active in medical device and software development, working with multiple companies over more than twenty-five years. Dr. Blaivas has completed multiple courses in programming and developing Artificial Intelligence/Deep Learning applications in image recognition. Dr. Blaivas has published 16 peer reviewed articles on AI applications in POCUS and continues to work on a number of AI research studies with colleagues around the world. Dr. Blaivas previously served as CMO of EchoNous, an AI and Hand Carried Ultrasound company. Currently Dr. Blaivas serves as CMO of AutonomUS Medical Technologies, an ultrasound, robotics and AI company and also serves as CMO of ThinkSono, a POCUS AI application medical technology company. Dr. Blaivas is chair of the AIUM, AI COP.
