Professor of Biomedical Engineering
The City College at the City University of New York
New York, United States
Dr. Luis Cardoso is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the City College of New York (CCNY). He is a MSc and PhD graduate from Paris University, and a former postdoctoral fellow from the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) at NASA. Dr. Cardoso is currently director of the multiscale and functional imaging laboratory at CCNY, and his research interest focuses on musculoskeletal and cardiovascular biomechanics, with particular interest on ultrasound wave propagation in the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems, experimental biomechanics, numerical modeling and contrast enhanced imaging of soft tissues using microCT. Dr. Cardoso's expertise includes analytical and numerical approaches to investigate bone loss using poroelasticity, as well as hyperelasticity of blood vessels and the role of microcalcifications on human atherosclerotic plaque rupture, acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction. Dr. Cardoso is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a member of an underrepresented group in research, with prior experience in leading independent research, a strong commitment on providing high quality training and mentoring to high school, bachelor and graduate engineering students from minority groups through summer and yearlong internships in his laboratory.
