Giancarlo Mari, MD, MBA, FACOG, FAGOS, FAIUM, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital (TCH).
I completed my medical training in Italy. Between 1987 and 2000, I completed a research fellowship in fetal echocardiography, a second ob/gyn residency, and an MFM fellowship. I have trained hundreds of students, residents, and approximately 100 fellows; many of them are leaders in Obstetrics and Gynecology both in the US and abroad. While at Baylor and Yale, I contributed to landmark studies, culminating in a publication in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2000. This study established the use of Doppler MCAPSV in fetal anemia. This non-invasive technique has become the global standard for detecting fetal anemia, ultimately replacing invasive procedures (amniocentesis and cordocentesis.)
From 2000 to 2008, I focused primarily on fetal intervention contributing to developing five fetal centers across the United States. In 2008, I was offered a role at UTHSC to work with a dedicated team to reduce infant mortality in Memphis, which, at the time, in some areas, was one of the highest in the world. In a few years, the perinatal mortality improved dramatically (from 20% above to 20% below the expected value). At UTHSC, we also established OB F.A.S.T, a simulation program in obstetrics. This program has trained over a thousand medical providers across the United States and was expanded to China in 2017.
I've had the privilege of practicing MFM on three continents and initiating two MFM fellowships in the U.S. (UTHSC and Cleveland Clinic, OH). I have had the privilege of serving as a professor since 2002, with three endowed chairs, and I am honored to have held the position of chairman for over a decade. Currently, I am proud to continue my clinical, education, and research work at Baylor/TCH, in Houston.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
