Ultrasound in Medical Education

Developing and Integrating a Longitudinal Ultrasound Curriculum in a School of Medicine and Health Professions: A Twelve-Year Reflection

This session explores the development and integration of a four-year longitudinal ultrasound curriculum within Eastern Virginia Medical School’s (EVMS) School of Medicine, as well as a pre-clinical ultrasound curriculum tailored for Physician Associate (PA) students. Topics include the evolution of the curriculum, challenges faced, key successes, and lessons learned. Participants will gain insights into ongoing improvements, associated startup and maintenance costs, and the impact of student perceptions and feedback on shaping program enhancements.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the Need for Ultrasound Curriculum Development
: By the end of this session, participants will be able to articulate the critical gaps in ultrasound education within medical and PA school curricula, discuss the growing need for standardized ultrasound instruction, and outline effective strategies to advocate for the development or expansion of ultrasound programs at their home institutions.
  • Develop and Structure Ultrasound Training Sessions
: By the end of this session, participants will have the tools to design a comprehensive ultrasound curriculum that includes core lectures, lab sessions, clinical skills practice, and advanced ultrasound topics. They will receive templates for scheduling and managing large cohorts with limited ultrasound equipment, enabling efficient and effective learning experiences.
  • Evaluate and Improve Ultrasound Education Practices: 
By the end of this session, participants will be able to analyze specific components of an ultrasound curriculum and recognize approaches that may have low efficacy. Using examples from an established program, participants will learn to identify potential pitfalls and implement proven practices to optimize ultrasound education at their institutions.
