Point-of-Care Pediatric Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

This session will focus on musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) through the perspective of pediatric sports medicine physicians that practice point-of-care ultrasound. MSKUS has traditionally focused on the sonoanatomy and pathology of the skeletally mature patient. While the young athlete can share similarities with the older athlete in this regard, they do have unique features that the clinician should be aware of to help with the evaluation and management of musculoskeletal injuries of the skeletally immature patient.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe effective scanning strategies that help the clinician recognize the normal sonoanatomy of the pediatric patient.
  • Identify at least three common pediatric musculoskeletal pathologies of both the upper and lower extremity that are easily evaluated by point-of-care ultrasound.
  • Distinguish between normal ultrasound findings and the pathology it mimics in a skeletally immature patient.
