Point-of-Care Ultrasound

Intestinal Ultrasound in POCUS: Geriatric to Pediatric Applications and Everything in Between

This session will be a crash course on intestinal ultrasound (IUS) in the clinical setting. Instructors will demonstrate a standardized examination that providers can perform in clinical practice followed by live demonstration on adult models to differentiate between large and small bowel patterns as well as common motility and inflammatory pathologies. Participants will estimate gastric content volume, identify the pylorus, and assess motility. Demonstrations of appendix ultrasound on adult models, as well as image examples of pediatric pyloric stenosis, and intussusception.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to: Identify the intestinal anatomical structures on ultrasound as well as recognize the different bowel patterns between the large and small intestine.
  • Participants will be able to: Demonstrate a standard technique for scanning the abdomen for small bowel obstruction as well as intussusception.
  • Participants will be able to: Identify sonographic appearance of common intestinal pathologies including abnormal motility and inflammatory processes.
